CALIX INTERVIEW

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

Hello Calix! I’m the Author. Would you mind if I asked you some questions today to share with our current and future readers?

“Author? Wow! Like... THE Author?”

Yes, the Author. Thank you for being a part of my story!

“Thank you for creating me.”

My pleasure! So how about those questions?

“Sure! What do you want to know?”

Great! I’m going to start off easy. What is your favorite color, and why?

“I’m going to have to say blue, because if I could pick what tail color I could get, that would be it. Being able to control water is way more useful than being stuck in the Dome.”

What is your earliest memory?

“Running around the Dome playing hide and seek with Coral and Thea, when I was maybe five. We ended up in The Center, which is the large glass domed room where all the deliberations take place. I was hiding on the center stage, where witnesses speak, behind the low round wall. In the middle of our game, The Council entered and began someone’s trial! So, we were all stuck in our hiding places, terrified of getting in trouble for being in there. It was fine for a little while...until they called the first witness to speak. He walked up and never looked down at me, but he stepped on my finger. My wail made him jump so high,” Calix’s smile flashes and his deep chuckle fills the air. “We definitely got our tails handed to us by our parents that day.”

Do you have any bad habits?

“Oh, Lusca... this is embarrassing,” he chuckles, passing a hand over his face. “Yeah, I crack my toes. Like habitually. It used to drive my mom crazy!”

What is your greatest fear?

Cheeks puffed, he contemplates his answer. “Not being able to protect the people that matter to me. Letting them down.”

Do you have any pets?

“No. It’s not common for people on the island to have pets. Our lives stay pretty busy which doesn’t leave much time for taking care of a pet. A few people have a cat or a small dog, but most of us don’t.”

Are you an only child? How many siblings do you have?

“I have...I mean, had...a little sister Loire, until she got sick and had to be...removed.” Eyes shuttered, he swallows hard.

If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go?

“Lusca...umm,” jaw clenching he takes a deep breath before answering. “To the day they took Loire. I would let her know I love her. I would fight for her, even though it wouldn’t have stopped them, so she would know I did everything I could to protect her,” his voice breaks and he stops to pull himself together. “Next question?”

What are your biggest pet peeves?

“I’d have to say when people lie. That drives me crazy. Or when people treat me like I am invisible.”

What are your hopes and dreams?

“Well, I hope I can make my parents proud and serve my community well. I may not have chosen to be a white tail, but I still want to do my job right and do what I can to protect the people that need it in my community.”

Do you have any hidden talents?

“I like to draw. Particularly sharp angles and buildings, you know, stuff like that. I’m also pretty athletic. When we would play games during physical interaction class, I was good at those.”

Most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?

“Okay, so everyone has fallen asleep during Mr. Conlinn’s class at least once. But mine was by far the worst!” Heat creeps up Calix’s cheeks as he speaks. “I had stayed up late to study for our test, and I finally felt ready to take it. But...I fell asleep on the test instead and had a dream that giant pizza monsters were chasing me! I actually woke myself up screaming, ‘The pizza is going to eat me!’ And I had drooled so much that when I sat up in my chair, the test papers were stuck to my face...I heard pizza jokes for weeks.”

Wow! Who knew pizza could be so scary, huh? Thank you for helping me out with this, Calix. That’s all the questions I have for you.

“No problem!”
